Top Five Romantic Bridges in China

The mortals think the bridge is only one kind of tools that help people pass through the rivers. Actually, most bridges have spirits. Each bridge, new or old, has a story, which may be romantic, miserable or sad. Can you feel the romance of the following five bridges?

Broken Bridge
Broken Bridge links the Baidi Causeway with the shore. It is particularly beautiful in winter when covered with snow. A well-known Chinese love story relates how on this bridge many hundreds of years ago the White Snake, in the shape of a beautiful woman, met the academic Xu Xian for the first time. They fell passionately in love, but a malicious monk forced them to part.

Rainbow Bridge
Rainbow Bridge is a provincial landmark, built in the beginning of the Song Dynasty, with length of 140 meters, a width of 6.5 meters, with four piers and archways. It crosses the river of Wu like rainbow. The eleven pavilions in different way make a long corridor. It is simple and unsophisticated. There are corrals and seats on the both sides for tourist getting a view and having a rest.

Maple Bridge
The Maple Bridge, Hanshan Temple, Tieling Pass, Maple Bridge Town and the Grand Canal make up the five sights of the Maple Bridge Scenic Area. The bridge was simple, unsophisticated and elegant. Like the Hanshan Temple, this bridge has been also eternalized by the poem Anchorage by the Maple Bridge. From on the bridge, visitor can enjoy a nice view of the ancient city of Suzhou. Tieling Pass, also known as Maple Bridge Watchtower, was a Ming Dynasty architecture, which witnessed ancient Chinese fighting against the Japanese invasion in the Ming Dynasty. Maple Bridge Town is a time-honored town dating back to the ancient Liang Dynasty, over one thousand years.

Jade Belt Bridge
Built of marble and white stone, the Jade Belt Bridge is one of the six bridges standing on the West Dike of Beijing's Kunming Lake. The bridge body is built by white marbles and the blue white stones. On the columns of pure white bridge, there are various types of Manchurian crane which are soaring in the clouds. The bridge arch is high and thin with extremely smooth shape. The semicircle aperture of bridge and the water inverted image form a transparent full moon. The picture is extremely moving.

Five-pavilion Bridge
It is a wide bridge across one of the narrow parts of the lake, and is covered by a series of pavilions. There are two pavilions on each end, connected to a large central pavilion. Scholars of traditional architecture think this is one of the most striking bridges in China because it combines the monumental structure of a bridge with the lightness and elegance of the inter-linking pavilions. Set in the middle of the garden and surrounded by some of the park's most famous sights and views, the Five Pavilion Bridge is not only interesting to look at, but also a great place to admire the garden. Under the bridge's pavilions you can look out over the rippling lake and the willows and pavilions along the shores.

10 Suggestions to Chinese Learners

1. Listen to the basics of the language until it becomes automatic.

Listen to it as many times as it takes until you know how every possible pinyin pronunciation, maybe a million times.

2. Find good starter's materials.

Some people have recommended Raychinese learning software (perhaps someone could recommend other starter's material?) Be sure that the material focuses on listening and speaking. It would also be ideal if it focused on practical dialogues.

3. Learn the radicals.

Almost 90% of characters are composed of a radical along with a pronunciation component. The radical tells you something about the meaning of the character. The pronunciation part gives you a rough idea about how the word sounds.

In any case, there are a lot of radicals. You probably don't need to memorize all of them at the start, but you'd memorize the 30 or 40 most important ones. You can spend a few hours practicing looking up unknown characters in the dictionary by identifying the radical. After a few months of practice looking up unknown characters, you'll become good at knowing which part of a character is the radical and which part refers to pronunciation.

4. Visit free websites.

Chinese Corner, E-Magazine (English and Chinese), Chinese Resource at www.raychinese.com are free. So are some other websites.

5. Label things in your apartment.

6. Enroll in a class or find a teacher.

Obviously, an experienced native speaker is an invaluable resource. Like others have said, it's good to find a teacher that will honestly correct your pronunciation and give you encouragement.

New Friends From Virginia

Anna & Samuel, new friends from Virginia, joined Rayzone on such a sunny day. So happy that they participated in Raychinese.com for Chinese learning.
We met Anna and Samuel for the first time at Daimei, a hot-pot restaurant two weeks ago. Hot pot can be taken as a special of Wuhan, though it is not so famous as in Chengdu. To our surprise, they like it very much, we taught them how to scald thin slices of meat into boiling soup and take out in few seconds and explain how to choose different oil plate according to the flavor—garlic, spicy or normal. Besides, we introduced the famous Wuhan snack-- 热干面(hot dry noodles) to them. It was the first time that they ate hot dry noodles, but it seemed that they loved it. We really enjoyed that lunch.
Anna and Samuel has been in Wuhan for business for nearly one month, they love Chinese culture as well as Chinese language, so our friend introduced Raychinese to them. 1. 陆克文--Kevin Rudd: Prime Minister of Australia. Kevin Rudd is a China expert 中国通 (pinyin: Zhongguo tong). He worked in China as a diplomat with his family in the 1980s. Today, his elder son is studying at FUDAN University in Shanghai, and his younger son who is in a senior high school starts to learn Chinese language too. Dashan: AKA Mark Rowswell, one performer in CCTV's 2009 Spring Festival Gala, has been called "the most famous foreigner in China", where he has worked as performer, television host and cultural ambassador for over 20 years. Although relatively unknown in the West, it's hard to find anyone in China who does not know of Dashan. Born and raised in Canada, Rowswell began studying Chinese in the mid 1980s, first at the University of Toronto and later at Beijing University. While in Beijing, Rowswell became interested in Chinese performing arts, particularly xiangsheng, a popular form of comic dialogue. An opportunity to appear on television suddenly gave Rowswell national exposure under the stage name "Dashan". Repeated appearances on programs with audiences in the hundreds of millions gradually turned "Dashan" into a household name across China.

3. Michael Phelps (US): who won his eighth gold medal of the 2008 Summer Olympics in the 4×100m medley on Sunday, breaking the record for most in a single Games. Phelps got everything ready before he started his Olympic visit to Beijing. He spent some time on Chinese learning over computer. He can speak Chinese a little bit for simple conversations. Origin of International Women's Day

International Women's Day (8 March) is coming. International Women's Day (8 March) is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday. When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.

International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. In ancient Greece, Lysistrata initiated a sexual strike against men in order to end war; during the French Revolution, Parisian women calling for "liberty, equality, fraternity" marched on Versailles to demand women's suffrage.

The idea of an International Women's Day first arose at the turn of the century, which in the industrialized world was a period of expansion and turbulence, booming population growth and radical ideologies. Following is a brief chronology of the most important events:

1909

In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day was observed across the United States on 28 February. Women continued to celebrate it on the last Sunday of that month through 1913.

1910

The Socialist International, meeting in Copenhagen, established a Women's Day, international in character, to honour the movement for women's rights and to assist in achieving universal suffrage for women. The proposal was greeted with unanimous approval by the conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, which included the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament. No fixed date was selected for the observance.

1911

As a result of the decision taken at Copenhagen the previous year, International Women's Day was marked for the first time (19 March) in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, where more than one million women and men attended rallies. In addition to the right to vote and to hold public office, they demanded the right to work, to vocational training and to an end to discrimination on the job.

Less than a week later, on 25 March, the tragic Triangle Fire in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working girls, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This event had a significant impact on labour legislation in the United States, and the working conditions leading up to the disaster were invoked during subsequent observances of International Women's Day.

1913-1914

As part of the peace movement brewing on the eve of World War I, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. Elsewhere in Europe, on or around 8 March of the following year, women held rallies either to protest the war or to express solidarity with their sisters.

1917

With 2 million Russian soldiers dead in the war, Russian women again chose the last Sunday in February to strike for "bread and peace". Political leaders opposed the timing of the strike, but the women went on anyway. The rest is history: Four days later the Czar was forced to abdicate and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. That historic Sunday fell on 23 February on the Julian calendar then in use in Russia, but on 8 March on the Gregorian calendar in use elsewhere.

Since those early years, International Women's Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women's movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women's conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point for coordinated efforts to demand women's rights and participation in the political and economic process. Increasingly, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of women's rights.

The Role of the United Nations

Few causes promoted by the United Nations have generated more intense and widespread support than the campaign to promote and protect the equal rights of women. The Charter of the United Nations, signed in San Francisco in 1945, was the first international agreement to proclaim gender equality as a fundamental human right. Since then, the Organization has helped create a historic legacy of internationally agreed strategies, standards, programmes and goals to advance the status of women worldwide.

Over the years, United Nations action for the advancement of women has taken four clear directions: promotion of legal measures; mobilization of public opinion and international action; training and research, including the compilation of gender desegregated statistics; and direct assistance to disadvantaged groups. Today a central organizing principle of the work of the United Nations is that no enduring solution to society's most threatening social, economic and political problems can be found without the full participation, and the full empowerment, of the world's women.

2000 - 2007

IWD is now an official holiday in Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother's Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation. Many from a younger generation feel that 'all the battles have been won for women' while many feminists from the 1970's know only too well the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women's visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.

However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. And so the tone and nature of IWD has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives.

Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. While there are many large-scale initiatives, a rich and diverse fabric of local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more.

Many global corporations have also started to more actively support IWD by running their own internal events and through supporting external ones. For example, on 8 March search engine and media giant Google even changes its logo on its global search pages. Corporations like HSBC host the UK's largest and longest running IWD event delivered by women's company Aurora. Last year Nortel sponsored IWD activities in over 20 countries and thousands of women participated. Nortel continues to connect its global workforce though a coordinated program of high-level IWD activity, as does Accenture both virtually and offline. Accenture supports more than 2,000 of its employees to participate in its International Women's Day activities that include leadership development sessions, career workshops and corporate citizenship events held across six continents - in eight cities in the United States and in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, South Africa and the UK. Accenture also coordinated am IWD webcast featuring stories about Accenture women worldwide that ran uninterrupted for 30 hours across 11 time zones via Accenture's intranet. Year on year IWD is certainly increasing in status. The United States even designates the whole month of March as 'Women's History Month'. So make a difference, think globally and act locally !! Story About Chinese Valentine’s Day

Chinese Valentine's Day is on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month in the Chinese calendar.

A love story for this day is about the 7th daughter of Emperor of Heaven and an orphaned cowherd. The Emperor separated them. The 7th daughter was forced to move to the star Vega and the cowherd moved to the star Altair. They are allowed to meet only once a year on the day of 7th day of 7th lunar month.

The story began from the good-looking poor orphaned boy living with his elder brother and sister-in-law. After his parents past away, his brother inherited the house and the land. The boy owned an old ox. He needed to work on the farm's field with the ox everyday. So he was called a cowherd. His daily life was just like in a Cinderella story.

The 7th daughter of Emperor is good at handcrafting, especially weaving clothing. So she was called a Weaving Maid. The Emperor likes her skill to weave clouds and rainbows to beautify the world.

The ox was actually an immortal from the Heaven. He made mistakes in the Heaven and was punished as an ox in the Earth. One day, the ox suddenly said to the cowherd, "You are a nice person. If you want to get married, go to the brook and your wish will be come true." The cowherd went to the brook and saw all 7 pretty daughters of Emperor came down from Heaven and took a bath in there. Fascinated by the youngest and also the most beautiful one, he took away her fairy clothes secretly. The other six fairies went away after bath. The youngest couldn't fly back without her fairy clothes. Then the cowherd appeared and told her that he would not return her clothes unless she promised to be his wife. After a little hesitation and with a mixture of shyness and eagerness, she agreed to the request from this handsome man. So they married and had two children two years later.

One day, the old ox was dying and told the cowherd that he should keep his hide for emergency purpose.

The Emperor found the sky's not that beautiful as before without the 7th daughter weaving clouds and rainbows. He wanted his daughter's grandmother to find the missing daughter and to bring her back. . While the 7th princess was flying to the Heaven with her grandmother, the cowboy wore the ox hide, took his children in two bamboo baskets with his wife's old fairy clothes and chased after his wife in the sky. The grandmother made a milky way in the sky with her hairpin, which kept them separated. The 7th princess was moved to the star Vega (The swooping - Eagle) in the Lyra (Harp) constellation. And the cowherd with his two children stayed in the star Altair (Flying one) in the Aquila (Eagle) constellation. The star of Vega is also known as the Weaving Maid Star and the star of Altair is as the Cowherd Star in China.

Magpies were moved by their true love and many of them gathered and formed a bridge for the couple to meet in the evening of the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, which is the day the Emperor allowed them to meet once a year.

They said that it's hard to find a magpie on Chinese Valentine's Day in China, because all magpies fly to make the bridge for the Weaving Maid and Cowherd. The one thing to prove that is the feathers on the head of the magpies are much lesser after the Chinese Valentine's Day. If the night Chinese Valentine's Day rains, the rain are the tears of the Weaving Maid and Cowherd.

I used to think that the Chinese character was difficult to learn, which is because the single character is difficult to memorize. Character is the basis of vocabulary, and most of Chinese vocabulary is two-word noun or compound word. Due to many reasons, two-word noun and compound word are easy to learn.

For example: 马车、火车、汽车、自行车、公交车 are all can be split into single character, and each character has its definite function in the word. But in English, this rule can be different, these words can be translated into cart、train、car、bicycle、bus, which are all separated words in spelling and have no connections from each other. There is compound word in English too, such as " push（推）＋ cart（马车）＝ pushcart（手推车）", but it is few.

The word马车(cart) is easy to memorize and write, and the pronunciation is same as the that when it is separated into single one, except that the second character 车 turn to be neutral tone. I refer to the English, because the pronunciation rule is so different in English. When reading an English word, you should know where the stress is.

When you are learning Chinese, the new word is combined with those characters we've learned, so it's a review process. We can guess the meanings of some words even without the help of dictionary.
